The GROW Model

We often use the GROW model with clients. It’s one of the most simplistic yet effective patterns of coaching, relying on just four conversation threads.
Grow stands for Goal, Reality, Options and Will. This model was first created in the 1980s by Sir John Whitmore and then further developed by other coaches such as Alan Fine and Graham Alexander.
G = GOAL
The start of the conversation is asking what the client wants. What is their goal? Everyone will want to achieve something different and unique, but the secret is to find out exactly what that goal is. For example, a client may say they want to write more business at work. Fine, that’s a goal, but would that client be happy writing 10% more or is the target higher? And over what period? Being specific about goals ensures the outcome is more focused. It’s also good to ensure the goal is positive rather than negative. For example, a client may want to ‘stop being fearful in meetings’. Converting that to ‘being confident and assertive in meetings’ gives the target behaviours.
R = REALITY
It’s very hard to get somewhere (your goal) if you don’t know where you’re starting from. It’s like using a map on a journey. You can only move forwards if you know where you are now. This is where we use targeted questioning to help the client take stock of the present situation, with an eye on the work ahead.
O = OPTIONS
This is where we invite the client to explore the many possible options that may be available. It’s about expanding the viewpoint and looking at all possible routes to the goal. Sometimes, even ideas that first seem ridiculous can have a place in the final plan. The client will be coached to mentally ‘try on’ some of the action required, flagging the pros and cons of each method.
W = WILL
To accomplish a goal means remaining committed to long-term, consistent action. As coaches, the best way we can help someone achieve their goals is by keeping them accountable to consistent action. What will they do from here? What action will be taken? We need to ensure the coachee has the motivation and support necessary to follow through on the task ahead.
